A catch can that keeps oil vapour out of the intake tract instead of letting it recirculate and coat the valves. On a direct injected engine there is no fuel wash to clean them, so what the PCV system carries over stays there.

Direct injection has no fuel wash
Port injected engines rinse the back of the valve every cycle. Direct injected ones do not, so whatever the PCV carries over bakes on and stays.
Empty it, do not forget it
A catch can only works while there is room in it. Check it at every oil change and drain it.
