The Short Version

Piper Cams is the UK firm that’s been re-grinding lobes for half a century — and they know Ford EcoBoost.

Four tiers, four EcoBoost platforms. Mild Road for the daily that wants a bit more. Fast Road for the spirited street build. Ultimate Road for the modified, tuned car. Rally for full-send race builds. Plus the valve springs to match.

What’s Piper Cams?

Piper Cams has been grinding performance camshafts in the UK since 1968. They started as a small motorsport supplier and grew into one of the most-trusted camshaft houses in Europe — the cams you’d see in time-attack Civics, BTCC Subarus, and Ford rally builds across the 80s, 90s, and 2000s. They’re still family-owned, still grinding in the UK, and their EcoBoost catalog has become a quiet standard among serious Ford tuners.

Where Piper separates from cheaper grinds: real lobe profile engineering. Their cams aren’t just “more aggressive” numbers on a spec sheet — the duration, lift, and overlap are tuned around the specific EcoBoost head geometry and VVT timing windows. The result: cars that pick up power without losing idle quality (Mild/Fast Road), or full-send race cams that wake up the top end on a built motor (Ultimate/Rally).

Lobe profile is everything. Piper’s been grinding the right ones for 50+ years.

The Four-Tier System

🏵

Mild Road

The conservative upgrade. Slightly hotter than OEM, OEM idle quality preserved, no tune absolutely required (though a re-tune helps). Right for daily-driven EcoBoosts that want a noticeable bump without losing manners.

Fast Road

The street-build sweet spot. Real torque + horsepower gains, slight lope at idle, requires a custom tune to fully exploit. The cam most Mustang EcoBoost and Focus ST tuned-street builds run.

🔥

Ultimate Road

For modified, tuned, supporting-mods cars. Built engine + supporting fuel/boost/exhaust required. Aggressive idle, big top-end. The cam choice when the engine is built and you’re hunting numbers.

🏁

Rally / Race

Full-send. Race-only, not for street use. Aggressive idle, peaky power band, requires fully built engine + race-spec valvetrain. The cam for time-attack, rally, and dedicated race builds.

Pick Your Cam

The decision tree most Piper buyers follow.

1

Daily Driver, OEM Manners

Mild Road. Noticeable upgrade, no idle penalty, can run on stock tune. Good when you don’t want anyone to know you swapped cams.

2

Tuned Street Build

Fast Road. The sweet spot for most tuned cars. Slight idle lope, real gains, pairs with COBB/SCT custom tune.

3

Built Motor, Going Big

Ultimate Road + Valve Spring Kit. Required: built engine, fuel system, intercooler, downpipes, custom tune. Aggressive but still street-driveable.

4

Track / Rally Only

Rally + Race Valve Springs. Race-only. Won’t pass smog. Aggressive idle. The cam that wakes up a fully-prepped race motor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a tune to run Piper Cams?

Depends on the tier:

Mild Road — technically you can run on the stock tune. You won’t hit max gains, but it won’t throw codes either. A re-tune still recommended for full benefit.
Fast Roadtune required to get the gains. Cobb / SCT / nGauge custom tune matched to your hardware combo.
Ultimate Roadtune required, plus supporting mods (intercooler, downpipes, sometimes fuel). Without supporting mods, you’ll be leaving gains on the table.
Rally — race-only. Tune is the least of your concerns — you need a built motor, race fuel, and a dyno session.

Do I need new valve springs with Piper Cams?

Tier-dependent:

Mild Road / Fast Road — can typically run OEM valve springs (depends on tune aggressiveness & rpm targets). Talk to us if you’re unsure.
Ultimate Road / Rallymatched valve springs required. Higher lift + aggressive ramp rates exceed OEM spring capability. For Fiesta ST we stock the Single Valve Spring Kit; for Mustang EcoBoost the Double Valve Spring Kit matches Ultimate/Rally cams. Focus ST/RS valve springs are sourced separately — ask us.

Will Piper Cams void my factory warranty?

Yes — aftermarket camshafts are a powertrain modification, so they affect the powertrain warranty on a car still under coverage. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act in the US protects you from blanket warranty denial — the dealer can’t void your entire warranty — but they can deny powertrain-related claims attributable to the cam swap. If the car is out of factory powertrain warranty, this isn’t a concern.

Mild Road vs Fast Road — what’s the real-world difference?

Mild Road: think of it as a “more honest” OEM — sharper throttle response, slightly more mid-range torque, OEM-level idle and driveability. Gains are modest (~5-15 wheel HP typically) but the car feels noticeably better. Fast Road: hotter cam profile, more meaningful gains (~15-30+ wheel HP on properly tuned cars), slight lope at idle, requires a re-tune. If you’re already tuned and running supporting mods, Fast Road is the right answer. If the car is otherwise stock and you just want a small bump without re-tuning, Mild Road.

How long does a Piper cam swap take to install?

On an EcoBoost (Mustang EB, Focus ST, Focus RS, Fiesta ST), a cam swap is a full-day job — 6 to 10 hours depending on the platform and whether valve springs are being changed simultaneously. Includes: removing intake/turbo plumbing, valve cover off, timing chain off, lobes swapped, springs swapped if needed, chain set back to spec, VVT actuators inspected, valve cover and accessories re-installed, oil prime, baseline scan. We won’t rush it — cam timing has to be exactly right or you can drop a valve.

Will Piper Cams work with my Cobb Accessport / SCT / nGauge tune?

Yes — any reputable EcoBoost tuner who works with Piper profiles can write you a Cobb / SCT / nGauge map for your cam tier. We can route you to tuners we trust (Lund Racing, AED, MRT, etc.) who have Piper experience on Mustang EcoBoost, Focus ST/RS, and Fiesta ST platforms. The cam swap itself doesn’t change which tuning device you use — just the calibration that runs on it.

Are these CARB-legal in California?

No — aftermarket performance camshafts do not have CARB EO numbers. They are intended for off-road / race use and will not pass California smog inspection. Same applies to most aftermarket performance cam product in the US. This is not a Piper-specific limitation; it’s how CARB classifies any cam that alters duration/lift/overlap from OEM spec.

Does FFP install Piper Cams?

Yes — our Thousand Oaks, CA shop installs Piper cams regularly on Mustang EcoBoost, Focus ST, Focus RS, and Fiesta ST platforms. Includes valve spring swap if your tier requires it, VVT actuator inspection, chain stretch check, and a baseline scan before you take the car. We can also coordinate with your tuner so the car gets a re-tune that matches the new cam profile. Contact us to schedule.
