01  /  Overview

The Bolt-On Turbo That Changed The EcoBoost Scene

When the 2015 Mustang EcoBoost came out, the aftermarket had a handful of piggyback tunes and not much else. Then Precision Turbo released the NX2 — a direct drop-in replacement for the factory turbo, with a billet compressor wheel and a dual ball bearing center section. It turned a 310 HP factory car into a 380 WHP street weapon with zero modifications. The install is so simple most customers do it in a Saturday afternoon.

Years on, the NX2 is still the bolt-on turbo we recommend first for 2015–2023 Mustang EcoBoost owners who want serious power without modifications. Proven. Reliable. And it just works.

02  /  Why The NX2

Real Engineering. No Compromises.

The NX2 isn’t a rebadged Chinese turbo in a Precision-stamped box. It’s a full Precision build, assembled in Hebron, Indiana, with the same CEA compressor wheel technology Precision uses on their Pro Mod record-holding turbos. The billet compressor wheel is machined from 2618-aluminum forging — same material grade as their top-tier drag race turbos. Dual ceramic ball bearings in the center section mean faster spool and longer life than the factory journal-bearing turbo it replaces.

The OEM-replacement housings are what make the install so clean. The turbine housing bolts to the factory exhaust manifold. The compressor housing matches the factory charge pipe outlet. The oil feed and drain lines use factory-spec fittings. Nothing to cut, weld, or re-fabricate — you pull the factory turbo off, bolt the NX2 on, plumb the stock oil lines back up, and drive it.

06  /  Installation

4–6 Hours. Saturday Afternoon.

Pull the stock turbo, bolt the NX2 in, reconnect everything. That’s it. No adapters, no custom piping, no engine harness work. Basic hand tools and a jack are enough — this has been done in home garages by first-time installers hundreds of times. The compressor housing bolts to the factory intercooler piping. The turbine housing bolts to the factory manifold. Oil feed and drain lines use factory fittings.

You’ll make meaningful gains on stock tuning, but we strongly recommend pairing the NX2 with a quality tune from a reputable shop to unlock its full potential — think 380 WHP on 93 octane or 450+ WHP on E85.

With the turbo kit and PD Tuning I bought through FFPerformance my car just pulls and pulls all the way to redline, it’s a whole new car. There’s no noticable increase in turbo lag, not that the stock EcoBoost had any, but the car is quick to pick up speed and has some nice top end power now.

    I’m using the precision NX2 turbo with the Full Race intercooler, cpe meth charge pipes and Snow Sno-210 methanol system. I’m tuned by Ryan at PDTuning and we have taken my car and pushed it to the limits of the stock block! There is no lag and now pushing 26-29psi, the car pulls ALL THE WAY through the gears now. Not like the stock turbo where it would fall on its face after it just started to get fun. This turbo and supporting mods have shut up every person ever told me I should have bought a v8. Get one. But only if you want to go really fast.

    I’ve been running the NX2 for a little over a year. The EcoBoost has full bolt on’s, tuned by PurpleDrank and also pushing Methanol. The power I’m getting out of this setup is honestly absurd for a 4cyl. I’ve had ZERO issues with this turbo setup and I’m very glad I went with the NX2. I’ve been teaching here and there and have been talking out some mean cars. I can’t say enough about this turbo, it really was easy to install and has completely changed the car. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants power out of their car without beaking the piggy bank.

    Pretty easy and straightforward install minus the oil drain line. Really wakes the car up, got mine with the 19psi actuator and it holds boost all the way to redline without maxing out the turbo. can’t beat it for the price.

    I want to thank Function Factory Performance for great experience. My son’s car was blowing grey/blue smoke from the exhaust upon start for the first several minutes. We investigated and determined the turbo was leaking oil and detecting the film from around the turbo. I researched online for turbo’s and decided to call Function Factory. They immediately answered the phone and was talking to someone live. After walking me through the process my son and I decided that we would take on the repairs ourselves and upgrade the turbo to a larger GEN2 drop in ready. The Cobb and a tune has to be purchased along with turbo which is done after the install. It took about 30 min to take the old turbo out, and about 30 min to put the new one in. I found a video online of the process and it worked identical to that. I do recommend how Function Factory suggested, and that was to take the oil outtake line from the block before placing the new turbo in. It was much easier making sure the valve was seated into the turbo slot correctly and securely. You do however need a small swivel adapter to get the bolts off and on the block. I can definitely recommend this to anyone needing to replace or upgrade their turbo. It took about 5 separate tunes, and now the car runs great. It’s smooth and has more power.

      Rest assured, this turbo is engineered to work seamlessly with the stock engine. Damage should only occur if the installation is faulty or the tuning is incorrect.
